I only serve one master: the king of the Marches Theoden son of Thengel, replied Eomer. - We do not serve the power of the distant Black Country, but we do not wage open war with it either. So if you are running away from her, you'd better leave our country. Unrest is spreading throughout the frontier and we are at risk; however, we only wish to remain free and live as we did, contenting ourselves with our own, not serving foreign masters, neither good nor bad. In better times, we gladly and amicably greeted foreigners, but in these troubled days, strangers, uninvited guests must meet with a suspicious and severe reception. Speak! Who are you? Who are you serving? On whose orders are you chasing the orcs across our steppe?
- Éomer, The Two Towers
