Necronomicon (2nd Edition)

The Necronomicon is arguably the most emblematic book in HP Lovecraft's mythology. In this game you assume the role of Abdul Alhazred, aiming to complete every section of the eldritch tome. It plays 2–4 people with modes of about 20 or 60 minutes. Necronomicon is presented as a limited edition continuing “The Writer,” featuring the striking art of François Launet (Goominet). The collector's edition includes exclusive Cthulhu pawns for sanity tracking, and the deluxe edition offers a handmade wooden Necronomicon book case in antique book style.

How to play: Your goal is to complete the Necronomicon. At the start, each player is dealt five cards; each card represents part of a section, identified by a symbol. A section is completed by collecting at least five matching cards. The game proceeds in rounds that end when a player completes a set number of sections—each round grows more challenging. Completed sections are marked with tokens until the volume is finished and the game is won.

On your turn you take two moves: draw a card (from the deck or the discard pile) and perform an action by playing a card to the table. Played cards bring new cards into your hand or help you discard—often forcing you to decide between sacrificing a key card for its action or playing conservatively. The card you play remains available for the next player to draw. At the end of a round, tokens are placed on completed sections; players left with cards in hand lose sanity. Rounds continue until all sections of the Necronomicon are complete and the game ends.
