Digging Down is played over several rounds. A round consists of several exploration turns – in each turn, players decide together whether to begin (another) exploration round or return to base. Each further exploration consumes a valuable torch, but allows for the discovery of further cave cards and the discovery of increasingly valuable finds. Pickaxes help extract resources, and swords enable combat against encountered enemies. Players can split up to explore the dungeon faster or join forces when an obstacle proves too difficult for a single hero. Loot must still be safely returned to base – sometimes it's worth taking a risk, sometimes it's better to retreat. Three difficulty levels allow for the challenges to be tailored to the team's experience and ensure this card game never gets boring! The game lasts about thirty minutes. The card game encourages collaborative planning and cooperation, and the variable card layout means each expedition can unfold differently.
