Railways of the Lost Atlas is an 18xx-style game set in a shifting landscape. The map, built by players as part of set-up, is different for each play. Players take on the role of individual investors who launch minor companies, build infrastructure, and generate revenue to increase their stock value or reinvest in the company. Minor companies eventually merge into major ones that have more freedom to expand their operations.
The twelve minor companies have distinct abilities that persist even after merging into a major to make for different combinations and unique company identities.

Landmarks of the Lost Atlas introduces four new modules to expand your Railways of the Lost Atlas games. These modules can be included individually or in any combination:
- Landmarks add new strategies as well as added flavor to maps that include them.
- The Metropolitan Transit Department adds a neutral Corporation to the game that players can use to benefit their own interests and/or hinder others.
- Events create temporary changes to the core rules of the game that players will need to adapt to.
- New Minor Companies and Major Corporations add variety to the Company abilities available in the game.
